The Leatherman Story

in 1975, Tim Leatherman had recently received his mechanical engineering degree from Oregon State University and went on a trip to Europe with his wife. Traveling on a bugdet, the two continued to see problems with broken pluming in hotels and roadside car issues along the way. Realizing that pliers would be a lot more handy than his pocket knife, Tim recognized the need for a multi-tool that could help him out in all of these situations, but wouldn't be difficult to carry around. After returning to the United States and many years of creating, patenting and pitching his new tool, he finally got his first order in 1983.

Then, business boomed. The tool, known originally as the Pocket Survival Tool or PST, sold 30,000 in the first year and over a million within 10 years. Originally founded in Oregon, the Leatherman brand is proud to still build and manufacture all their tools in Portland. To this day, Leatherman tools are reliable for any big adventure or small task, and offer the user the same perseverance as their creator, Tim Leatherman, who vows that his quality products will always be made in the USA.
