Custom Napkins – Terminology Defined

Custom napkins; they may be small, but they sure pack a lot of promotional punch!

One of the easiest and most affordable ways to add a special touch to your restaurant, bar, wedding, or special event, custom napkins are a timeless detail that will display your logo or message in style.

From cocktail napkins, to luncheon napkins, to dinner, eco-friendly, and wedding napkins, we’ve got the perfect option for every need. All of our napkins come custom printed, and are available in a number of sizes, colors, and styles to perfectly match your details.

When browsing our napkin selection, you’ll notice a few different types of napkin plys, or thickness options, as well as some other descriptors, like foil stamped, debossed, coin edging, and almost linen. To help you decide which napkin is best for your business or event, we’ve put together a handy guide below defining the most common napkin terminology to help make your ordering process a breeze.

Ply: A ply is a thickness or layer of folded material.

1-Ply: Our 1-ply napkins feature one layer of material and are not as soft or as absorbent as thicker ply options. Because of this, they are a great economical choice for large parties or casual atmospheres.

2-Ply: The perfect combination of value and quality, our 2-ply napkins feature two layers of soft, absorbent materials.

3-Ply: Featuring three layers of material, our 3-ply napkins are made from soft, facial quality, absorbent paper tissues, and are our most commonly ordered napkins.

Almost Linen: Though almost linen napkins are only 1-ply, they’re made out of heavyweight material that looks and feels like soft linen. Almost linen napkins are a durable and elegant choice for weddings and other formal events.

Coin Edging: A coined edge is an embossed pattern of lines around the outside edges of a napkin.

Foil Stamped: Foil printing is the application of metallic or pigmented foil onto the surface of a product. Decidedly shinier than standard inks, metallic and foil inks are often used to achieve a striking three-dimensional effect and sophisticated look. We offer two types of foil imprints for our custom napkins: metallic and matte. Our metallic foil stamped napkins offer a shiny look, while our matte foil stamped napkins are a bit more subtle, though certainly still bold and striking. Matte foil imprints are a great option on darker napkin colors where you might worry about an imprint really standing out when using standard inks.

Debossing and Embossing: Standing out in relief giving the appearance of a raised up look, embossing, and stamped into or pressed down into a design, debossing, are print methods that make an area more tactile and prominent than the surrounding area, suggesting a slightly three-dimensional look.
