The idea for foam wavers first came about in 1978 when a Texas high school teacher, Geral Fauss, created a one-dimensional, oversized hand making the "number one" sign, which his students then used to create wooden cutouts painted with the "#1" symbol in the school's colors. These signs were to be sold to raise money for the school's industrial arts club, and were apparently a huge hit as they quickly sold out.

Inspired by this success and many other successful scenarios that followed, over the next year, Fauss experimented with a number of different materials and designs, before launching his brand, Spirit Industries, and obtaining copyrights on several foam waver styles.
