History of the Grocery Bag and Paper Lunch Sack

For most of recorded history, containers for transporting goods were constructed of leather, wood and cotton, as paper, which used to be made by hand one sheet at a time, was considered a luxury and was only used for books, records and letters by a fortunate literate few. It wasn't until 1799 that a French inventor named Louis-Nicolas Robert was granted a patent for a machine that produced rolls of paper. It is thanks to this machine that paper became available to the masses. Soon, merchants started using rolled paper to package goods, but this didn't always yield smooth results. Eventually, merchants started an attempt to make paper bags by hand, which didn't always prove successful. Thus, the race for the first paper bag making machine was on.

It was in 1852 that the American inventor Francis Wolle received the first patent for a paper-bag machine which used steam and paste to create bags in the shape of envelopes. Though this machine became popular, the bags it produced weren't very versatile, yet it wasn't until the late 1860s when Margaret Knight, an employee of the Paper Bag Company in Springfield, Massachusetts, brought an idea to the table that would revolutionize the industry and give us the paper bag design we all know and love today.

Today, the basic paper bag has evolved into something much more utilitarian and durable, but the bag had to get its start somewhere.
