Glass Paperweight History

The earliest paperweights are thought to date back to the Chinese Han dynasty, around the same time that paper was invented in 105 BC. These early paperweights were made from white jade and shaped like real, as well as mythical, beasts. By the 18th and 19th centuries, paperweights started to gain popularity beyond China, reaching other parts of Asia, as well as Europe and the United States, and were predominantly made of glass. Beautifully designed, paperweights quickly became prestigious items to have, as well as a popular collector's item. Some of the most desirable paperweights were made in France between what's called the "classic years," between 1845 and 1860, at three major factories: Baccarat, St. Louis, and Clichy. Paperweight collectors to this day still take great pride in the works produced by these manufacturers. In fact, original paperweights from these factories today can go for over $100,000 at an auction!
